Blues Music Award Nomination

The announcement came out Dec. 13 from the Blues Foundation: Mary is nominated in two categories, “Acoustic Album” and “Acoustic Artist”, for a Blues Music Award. The ceremonies will take place in Memphis in May of 2012. To see the full list of nominees or to vote (you’ll need to join to vote), go to www.blues.org. This is obviously quite good news for Mary and she sends out thanks to Yellow Dog Records for their hard work and support!

Thanks to the Cascade Blues Assn. and the voting public for the honor of a Muddy Award for “Acoustic Guitar”!

Seems to be the season for nominations. I am up for “Best Female Artist” at the Portland Music Awards scheduled for January. To cast your vote and see details, go to www.portlandmusicawards.com.
I’ve got some special gigs coming up this month. Guitars Galore with Alan Hager and Thad Beckman at O’Connors on Dec. 17.
Only a great band could keep me out late on New Years Eve! I’ll be joined at the Brass
erie by Kevin Deitz on bass, Carlton Jackson on drums and a surprise piano player. Get a nap and join us! Very excited about this one!

I’m happily home again in Portland, just in time for the monsoons. Really looking forward to some great and unusual gigs here as well as in Seattle and Olympia this month. Come on out of the rain and cold and into the warmth where the music will make you forget all about the soggy, soggy ground! Also a good distraction from the impending holidays!

New CD out soon

“Misery Loves Company”, a CD of duets on Yellow Dog Records, will be released mid-summer. The big CD Release Show is slated for Aug 27 and 28 in Colorado and Sept 10 at the Secret Society Ballroom in Portland. Some of my musical collaborators are Dave Frishberg, Curtis Salgado, Colin Linden, Alan Hager, Gideon Freudmann and more. This one was great fun to record and should please all the folks who ask to hear more of me!

One busy spring

Spring has arrived in the blooming NW and my favorite euphorbias are out in full force. Even on a dark and stormy Portland day, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

The new CD was recorded in March with some great mostly local folks. This one is for the fans who always ask for less side musicians and more of me. Duets include me w/Dave Frishberg, Curtis Salgado and James Mason to name a few. Yellow Dog Records is looking at a summer release date.

Mixing was done in Vancouver, BC with Colin Linden at the controls. Colin also added his virtuosity to one of my tunes.

Some great musical surprises during my two weeks in NY and PA…Meeting ragtime guitar legend Dave Laibman in Brooklyn…having Pat Donohue, Stephen Bennett and dobro king Mike Neer show up and sit in…Molly Mason and Jay Unger showing up and playing at my gig with Happy Traum near Woodstock…but best of all was being able to spend some quality time with my son Jesse Withers who did all the driving and played bass along with me. I loved the mother/son traveling show.

Home sweet home until May with some great gigs on the schedule.

January tidings

Winter, such as it is, is upon us in the great NW. This is my time to woodshed, write and plan for the next recording in March. I’ve ordered a guitar from the Santa Cruz folks and will pick it up on my trip to the Bay Area this spring. April brings some gigs from Brooklyn to PA with my son Jesse. I’m looking forward to this one. Teaching some eager students this winter and generally staying busy!
